The Latest From AR:
Spring tackle has begun - albeit rather slowly and wet. With a handful of training sessions and one match under their belts the AR U13, U15 and HS teams are looking forward to the warmer and dryer weather that's been forcast for the coming week. Our first home matches will be this weekend at George Washington Middle School. The U13s will host Great Falls/Vienna at 2:00pm. The U15s will then host Western Loudoun at 3:30. Our young high schoolers will head down the GW Parkway to take on Ft Hunt at Collingswood Park.

AR Raise $1000 for Special Needs Playgound
On March 15th at Daniel O'Connell's Restuarant in Old Town, Alexandria Rugby raised $1,000 in support of the special needs playground project being developed by the Kelley Cares Foundation and Alexandria Miracle League for the city's Therapuetic Recreation Program office. Past recipients of AR's fundraising include the Christchurch, New Zealand earthquake relief effort, the Alexandria Miracle Field project and the Center for Alexandria's Children.
Many thanks to everyone who contributed and helped out. A very special thank you goes to Trini Hughes and the staff at O'Connell's for allowing us into their wonderful restaurant each year to raise money for our youth rugby programs. They are terrific hosts and true rugby and community supporters.

Spring Tackle Season Starts Soon
New Boys High School Program
AR is thrilled to announce the initiation of a new high school level program this season. AR's first high school team will kick-off it's innaugural season this spring as a JV-level squad comprised solely of 9th and 10th graders. The program is open to all 9th and 10th grade boys regardless of age or school.
This is a notable step in the growth of youth rugby in our area as it illustrates the growing interest in the sport and answers the call for a program open to students from all the area high schools. We are pleased to have the resources to provide such a program and fill this need for the community.
Training for all the tackle teams will start in mid-February with the first match to be played in late March. Stay tuned for more information soon.
For more information about the high school program please contact Fred Wixson.
AR's Annual Membership Drive Underway
Membership in AR helps us promote the sport of rugby in Alexandria, especially among the youth. Please consider becoming a member or renewing your current membership and help us continue to coach the children and promote the sport throughout the area.
Some of the ways your membership dollars were spent in 2013:
- Coach development: Alexandria Rugby paid to have five coaches attend a USA Rugby tackle coaching course and to have all of our touch coaches take the joint IRB-USA Rugby online coaching certification program. And in the best interests of the kids we also registered and ran background checks on all of our coaches.
- Assistance to needy families: Approximately 15% of our youth players in 2013 came from households of limited financial means for which we provided scholarships. Our commitment is to introduce rugby to all of the children in Alexandria. We won’t turn anyone away.
- Reduced Participation Fees: Rugby has the lowest participation fee of any youth sport in Alexandria. We are not in this to make money; we are in it because we love the game and believe that rugby is a terrific activity for the kids. Low fees allow and entice more families to participate.
