Rugby Virginia 2014 State Championships

It's been a fun, fast summer season of rugby in Alexandria. Now it's time for the big state tournament! Hosted by Prince William Youth Rugby and held at James Long Park in Haymarket, the tournament is where all the hard works pays off. AR is entering 10 teams into the tournament - 4 tackle and 6 touch. The kids have worked and played hard all summer (some started way back in the February snows) and are eager to show everyone what they've got. Tackle matches will be played on Saturday and touch matches on Sunday.

Download the official tournament information packet for everything you'll want/need to know about the event.

Summer Rugby in Alexandria

Summer rugby in Alexandria kicks-off in early Jume and runs through July. We have both tackle and touch rugby programs for kids ages 5 to 18. The young boys and girls start out with touch rugby, a terrific, non-contact game that teaches the basics of rugby without the contact. At its essence, touch rugby is like a big game of tag on steriods - especially at the younger levels.

As the players age-up they develop more and more game specific skills which helps those that move into tackle rugby around ages 10 or 11. Our tackle program currently serves boys only, ages 10 to 18. Once there are enough girls interested in playing tackle we will form a team for them.

Registration is now open for all our programs via our online registration system. Additional info can be found on our Touch and Tackle pages.

AR Supports Kelley Cares Foundation Playground Build

Alexandria Rugby held a fundraiser at Daniel O'Connell's Restuarant in Old Town on March 15th in support of the special needs playground project being developed by the Kelley Cares Foundation and Alexandria Miracle League for the city's Therapuetic Recreation Program office. For the fourth consecutive year AR used the final day of the annual 6 Nations rugby tournament to help another worthy cause. Past recipiects have included the Christchurch, New Zealand earthquake relief effort, the Alexandria Miracle Field project and the Center for Alexandria's Children.

The fundraising coincided with the final round matches of the storied European rugby championship tournament that O'Connell's broadcasts live throughout the day. The first match of the day kicked-off at 8:30am and the last at 1:00pm. European nationals and American rugby fans from around the area gather at O'Connell's to watch the matches and enjoy the commoraderie of the greater rugby community. AR is again pleased to be able to give back to the community and support those with special needs.

AR's Annual Membership Drive Underway

Membership in AR helps us promote the sport of rugby in Alexandria, especially among the youth. Please consider becoming a member or renewing your current membership and help us continue to coach the children and promote the sport throughout the area.

Some of the ways your membership dollars were spent in 2013:

  • Coach development: Alexandria Rugby paid to have five coaches attend a USA Rugby tackle coaching course and to have all of our touch coaches take the joint IRB-USA Rugby online coaching certification program. And in the best interests of the kids we also registered and ran background checks on all of our coaches.
  • Assistance to needy families: Approximately 15% of our youth players in 2013 came from households of limited financial means for which we provided scholarships. Our commitment is to introduce rugby to all of the children in Alexandria. We won’t turn anyone away.
  • Reduced Participation Fees: Rugby has the lowest participation fee of any youth sport in Alexandria.  We are not in this to make money; we are in it because we love the game and believe that rugby is a terrific activity for the kids. Low fees allow and entice more families to participate.
