AR's annual showcase of top rugby happens this year on May 15th at George Washington Middle School.
Alexandria Rugby believes that the more the community sees and experiences quality rugby the more quickly they will come to appreciate the sport and consider letting their children play it. This will be our second year for this event. Last year over 1,000 people watched Alexandria mayor Bill Euille's select team take on a select side from Alexandria's sister city, Dundee, Scotland for the Mayor's Cup trophy. It was a fantastic day
with several preliminary matches, a youth clinic attended by nearly 60 kids, a fantastic Mayor's Cup match and a fun and relaxing social afterwards.
Come out for more of the same this year. The Alexandria Roosters Old Boys team will kick things off at 11:00am with a match against the Washington Irish RFC. Next up will be a test match between two squads of the area's top women ruggers all vying for a spot on the first Mayor's Cup women's team. At 1:00 there will be an hour-long youth clinic open to boys and girls ages 6 to 13, followed by youth flag rugby matches between three city elementary school clubs. At 3:00 the main match will get underway. This year the Mayor's Select XV will take on a touring side from England - the Royal Air Force - Benson RFC.
And of course, we'll follow it all up with a terrific post match social at the Eagles Club in Old Town from 5:00 to 9:00pm
