Alexandria Youth Touch Rugby has success at Virginia state tournament!
2008 was a fun and successful summer for Alexandria Youth Rugby. 15 children ages 6-12 signed up and attended practices on Tuesday and Thursday nights from June to August.
On Sat Aug 2, players from the Alexandria program participated in the Virginia Youth Touch Rugby Championship Tournament in Springfield. At the tournament, Alexandria combined with the Bailey’s Crossroad’s Rugby Club and entered teams in all age groups. The tournament was divided by age into the following divisions: under 9 years old, under 11 years old, under 13 years old and under 15 years old.
The combined Alexandria/Bailey’s team had great success, winning the under 15 division, placing second in the under 13 and third in both the under 11 and under 9. Donnell Knight of Alexandria was named the most valuable player for the tournament in the under 13 division.
Alexandria Youth Rugby is a Parks and Recreation Department program that is supported by Alexandria Rugby which has received generous support from many city businesses including Jen Walker of McEnearney Associates Realtors. The team has been practicing since June coached by Fred Wixson and assisted by several AR members including: Owen Malone, Brian Collins, Matt Otto and Christine LaBar.
This has been a fun summer for players and coaches alike and we hope to build on this next year. |
