Alexandria Rugby Home

Summer 2011 Season Recap

Alexandria took the lead this year as the largest youth rugby club in Virginia with over 120 kids and was able to field competitive touch and tackle teams through out the whole season.  The strength and depth of our club was evident at the Rugby Virginia Commonwealth Cup tournament by both the large tent city of supporters and parents, and the quality of play by our youngsters.

A special congratulations goes out to our youngest players who won the Cup Championship at the U7 level.  The Wasps took home first place while the Dragonflies and Lightening Bugs tied for third.    Scott Boggess and all the U7 coaches ran a great program that will be a model for all other clubs to follow.

2011 Rugby Virginia Tournament Results:
U7: Wasps - Cup Champions; Dragonflies and Lightening Bugs - Plate Champions
U9: Cardinals - Plate Finalist; Robins - Plate Semi Finalist
U11: Falcons - Plate Finalists; Hawks - Plate Semi Finalists; Owls - Bowl Champions
U13: Eagles - Plate Finalists
U13 Tackle - Cup Semi Finalist

Thank you all coaches, parents and kids for a fun and exciting summer season.

Youth Rugby in Alexandria:

Youth rugby in Alexandria is primarily a summer sport that is jointly administered by Alexandria Rugby and the city's Department of Parks and Recreation. We compete in the Rugby Virginia youth league against teams from throughout Virginia. Serving boys and girls ages 6 to 14, we play both touch and, new this year, tackle rugby. All kids can play touch while tackle is reserved just for boys born between Jan 1, 1998 and Dec 31, 1999 (we will be entering just one tackle team this year).

We start the youngest children off with touch rugby, a seven-a-side version of the sport that focuses on fun, fitness, and skill building while promoting the concepts of teamwork and sportsmanship. The tackle rugby program is a modified version of the full contact game that structures the game in a safe fashion to promote fun, skill building and inclusion. The season runs from mid-June to early August with practices held on Tuesday and Thursday evenings at the Braddock Road fields, adjacent to GW Middle School.

Games are typically played on Thursday evenings and Saturday mornings. We are always looking for volunteers to help organize, coach and ref matches, especially the touch version (which is a pretty simple game so no rugby experience is necessary to help). Please consider giving some time - the kids really appreciate it!

More information about the the summer program, including registration forms can be found on the Rec. Department's website, or contact AR's Youth Coordinator, Fred Wixson . There is a nominal fee payable to the City of Alexandria of $30.00 that helps cover field costs, trophies and administration.

Youth rugby is a fun and safe way of introducing our youth to the sport. More information about youth rugby can be found on the USA Rugby website, the governing body for the sport in the United States.
