Currently, rugby is recognized in just 1 of the 4 high schools in the city of Alexandria. T.C. Williams, the city's lone public high school has recognized a club since 2003. Under the tutelage of Alexandria Rugby's president Jeff Murphy, the TC club has fielded teams each year in the Potomac Rugby Union's (PRU) second division. Interest in the program has steadily increased each year and in 2007 a girls team was formed.
Boys from Bishop Ireton High School have in past years organized a club under the name Bishop Ireton/Cambridge Road Rugby. While a team was not pulled together for the Spring '07 season, Alexandria Rugby hopes to help revive interest in the sport at the school and with its student body in time for the '08 season.
Beginning in the summer of 2007, AR will be managing a Sevens program open to all city residents between the ages of 13 and 18.
Contact Jeff Murphy, director of AR's U-19 program for more information.
